State Youth Games

3 Designs - 2007, 2008, 2009

http://www.stateyouthgames.com/syg/

State Youth Games is an annual Victorian youth sports event supported by Youth Vision which consists of many sports and activities including netball, basketball, swimming, aerobics, chess, and dodge ball among many others. Youth groups across Victoria would compete in these team and individual events during Queen's birthday weekend in June each year. A campsite is allocated for each group and night activities such as live music take place.

The web site provides a plethora of information for this event, and the web site's design reflects the design of the yearly changing video and printed material used for the event. I was approached to first take over the design of the web site by Andy Steel in January of 2007, and have since created 3 design templates for the event's 2007, 2008, and 2009 years. The currently live design is the 2009 version, however the older 2008 and 2007 templates are still viewable online by appending a "force_template" attribute to the url. Click the below links to view each design:

The images below are screen shots of the web site's 3 designs:

Dandenong Flames

Dandenong Flames

2004 - 2006

Dandenong Church of Christ's youth group program for high school aged youths (nicknamed "The Dandenong Flames") meet up every Friday night for activities and events. The former web site's allowed for the promotion of the group, as well as providing a shout box and discussion board for the web site's small community. Future events held by the youth group were posted on the web site's calendar, and the web site's hosted downloadable consent forms and sign up information for the youth group's attendance at State Youth Games (see above).

I worked on the design of the web site's whilst a Youth Leader in the group. Although the web site's is no longer online, below are some screen shots of the site:

Cacktus

Cacktus

2005

Cacktus was a local 5 piece comedy band that have since broken up. They released a live CD and DVD which may still be available for purchase, please contact band member Matt Cutler for more information regarding this.

I was asked to do the design for the Cacktus web site's as a result of my work on the "Dandenong Flames" web site's (mentioned above). The web site's features 3 collapsible elements on the side of the web site's; a poll, navigation menu and calendar. The idea was to keep the design simple using solid cartoon style colours that matched their band logo and print designs.

Here are some screen shots of the design:

Unfair Advantage

Unfair Advantage

2003

Unfair advantage was the name of a local punk band created by Caleb Garfinkel and Mick Briggs, and the web site's was designed to promote the band with news, lyrics, upcoming gig information and a discussion board for its growing fan base. The web site's most unique feature was a javascript based style sheet switcher allowing users to choose between the web site's 3 different colour schemes. The band broke up in 2004 and consequently the web site's is no longer online.

Paladin's Portal

Paladin's Portal

2003 - 2005

Paladin's Portal was conceived in 2003 primarily as a personal web site's and blog. I had experimented with creating a http server using software on my home computer and as a result wanted to take my knowledge of writing html for it a step further. As the web site's was developed, I began to learn how to take advantage of CSS and JavaScript to enhance the design, as well as learning to using PHP and My SQL to handle content manipulation.

The web site's provided an avenue for myself and close friends to write collectively as a small community before the popularisation of web sites such as twitter, facebook or myspace. The web site's was not often updated throughout 2004 as it was a busy Year 12 study year for all involved with the site. The site was taken offline in 2005.
